For most of my career I've been asking a version of the same question:
Why, despite access to more health information than any previous generation, do so many of us still feel emotionally flat, mentally foggy, or not quite ourselves?
My own experience pushed that question from professional curiosity into something more urgent. For years I experienced a persistent sense that my mood, my energy, and my appetite were operating outside my own influence, and I could not explain it through any of the conventional frameworks I had been trained in. It turns out that the answer was not about a single habit or deficiency, but largely about the brain and the systematic gap between the conditions it needs to function well and the environment modern life consistently provides. These experiences were not random, they were the brain responding predictably to conditions that were not being met. What I came to understand is that the shift back, from that overstimulated, reactive state to something slower and more recognisably yourself, is not a matter of doing, tracking, or optimising more, but rather a matter of restoring the conditions the brain was designed for.
My curiosity sits at the intersection of science and art; alongside physiology and nutrition, I’m drawn to design, aesthetics, the natural world, and the environments we inhabit. Over time it became clear that the conditions the brain needs to function well extend far beyond diet. The pace of our lives, the spaces we occupy, the rhythms of our days, and the quality of our relationships all exert a measurable influence on the brain’s capacity for mood regulation, clear thinking, and sustained wellbeing.
What you'll find here is my work mapping that territory. Drawing from evolutionary neuroscience, physiology, nutrition, and the arts, I examine how nourishment, movement, environment, rhythm, and connection shape the neurochemical conditions for feeling well, and how many features of modern life quietly erode them.
My research aims to understand what restoring those conditions actually looks like, and to translate that understanding into work that is rigorous enough to be trusted and grounded enough to be useful.
